AGATU COMMUNITY DEMANDS ACTION AS HERDSMEN ATTACKS CONTINUE

By: Fasasi Hammad
Residents of Agatu Local Government Area in Benue State staged a protest in Obagaji, the council headquarters, on Monday, calling for the removal of Fulani herdsmen from their communities ahead of the farming season.
Armed with placards and chanting “Fulani must go,” the protesters marched to the local government secretariat to voice their concerns. They said the imminent rainy season requires them to begin planting, warning that the presence of herders and their cattle could destroy crops and spark conflicts.
An eyewitness told the media that the protest was driven by ongoing insecurity in the area.

“The demonstration is taking place in Obagaji because of the persistent herdsmen crisis. They continue to attack and kill our people with sophisticated weapons. We can no longer safely access our farms or carry out farming activities,” the resident said.
He added, “May God help the people of Agatu. We will remain steadfast because this is our land; we did not inherit it together with them.”
The protesters demanded that herders vacate farmlands to ensure a peaceful planting season.
Confirming the protest, the Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area, Melvin Ejeh, said he had engaged with both the protesting youths and community elders to address their concerns.
“I have spoken with the protesting youths and met with the elders. Measures will be taken to address the situation,” Ejeh said, noting that details of security strategies would not be publicly disclosed.
He assured residents that efforts are ongoing to maintain peace and prevent crises in the area. “I am pleased that the frequency of herders’ attacks has decreased, and we will continue to do everything possible to avoid any chaotic incidents,” he added.
