A middle-aged man has been accused of killing his girlfriend over alleged infidelity in a community in Cross River State, triggering outrage among residents who are demanding justice.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Saturday, around 6:00 a.m., when the suspect, identified as 35-year-old Malime Ejor, allegedly attacked his 26-year-old girlfriend, Moshie Igu, at a farm in Nwang Village, Ekajuk community of Ogoja Local Government Area.

A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said neighbours rushed to the scene after hearing a disturbance but were unable to intervene in time.

“We heard shouting and rushed there, but he was already attacking her with a machete,” the source said.

Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, said the suspect is in custody and an investigation is ongoing.

“Police operatives visited the scene upon receiving the report. The suspect was arrested and also protected from being lynched by angry youths. He remains in custody while investigations continue,” he said.

He added that the victim’s body is yet to be deposited at the General Hospital mortuary in Ogoja, pending necessary arrangements, while the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
