The Nigeria Police Force has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against cyber-enabled crimes with the arrest of a suspect linked to the alleged defrauding of an American woman of $550,000.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon, the arrest was carried out by operatives of the INTERPOL National Central Bureau, Abuja.

The suspect, Emwanta Smith, a resident of Uselu in Benin City, was apprehended on March 26, 2026, following a coordinated operation conducted between March 23 and 26, based on credible intelligence and a formal complaint lodged by the victim.

Police investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly impersonated prominent government officials and other notable public figures to gain the victim’s trust, subsequently inducing her to transfer funds through cryptocurrency platforms.

Further findings indicated that the proceeds of the crime were laundered through the purchase of five vehicles and an uncompleted property in Benin City. The assets have since been secured as exhibits.

Operatives also recovered counterfeit cash amounting to $10,000 from the suspect.

The police said investigations are ongoing as efforts continue to unravel the full extent of the fraud network and ensure that all those involved are brought to justice.
