Operatives of the Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have arrested a 37-year-old suspected drug trafficker, Roland Owie.
The State Commandant, Dr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists on Monday, April 6, 2026, in Benin City.
According to Ofoyeju, the suspect, who hails from the Iganke community in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Edo State, was apprehended in connection with 125 bags of dried weeds suspected to be skunk cannabis, with a total weight of 1,378 kilograms.
He said operatives uncovered and dismantled a major illicit warehouse in the community where the suspect, who is one of the suspected members of the drug cartel, was arrested and massive consignment of cannabis sativa were confiscated.
The NDLEA state commandant opined that the operation underscored the agency’s unwavering commitment to drug supply suppression.
He added that the operation was executed based on credible intelligence, while emphasizing that the bust is a critical victory in the ongoing war against substance abuse and illicit drug trade.
“This successful operation is a testament to our relentless pursuit of drug cartels and our strategic focus on supply suppression. The seizure of 1,378 kilograms of cannabis in one single operation unequivocally represents a significant dent in the distribution network of these harmful substances.
“The importance of intercepting such a large quantity is better appreciated against the backdrop that it cuts off drug supply from reaching our streets, our schools, and our communities, thereby saving countless young people from the devastating scourge of addiction,” he said.
While emphasizing that suppressing the supply of drugs remains a key focus of the NDLEA’s strategy, Dr. Ofoyeju noted that the agency will continue its efforts to reduce demand through advocacy and rehabilitation programs.
He highlighted that cutting off the source of illicit drugs is critical, explaining that every kilogram seized disrupts the criminal economy, weakens trafficking networks, and contributes to a safer society.
“This arrest and seizure sends a strong message to all drug barons that Edo State is not a safe haven for illegal activities. We maintain zero tolerance, backed by robust intelligence and operational capabilities,” he stated.
Dr. Ofoyeju also praised the professionalism and diligence of the command’s operatives for their outstanding performance and urged the public to support the agency by providing actionable information.
