A windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall on Tuesday damaged parts of the newly built Kugbo Bus Terminal in Abuja, raising concerns among residents and commuters.

According to a statement by Lere Olayinka, spokesperson to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, the storm struck in the afternoon, affecting not only the terminal but also nearby infrastructure, including the Nyanya pedestrian bridge and surrounding buildings.

Despite the damage, authorities confirmed that no casualties or property losses were recorded.

“From preliminary reports, no one was injured, and no vehicle was damaged,” the statement said.

In response, Wike directed the immediate deployment of security personnel to the area to maintain order and ensure the free flow of traffic, while urgent repairs are to be carried out on the affected structures.

The incident has renewed public concern over delays in the commencement of operations at key transport terminals in the FCT. Residents have repeatedly called for the opening of the Kugbo and Mabushi bus terminals, which were completed months ago but remain non-operational.

Commuters, particularly those in satellite towns like Nyanya and Karu, say the delay has worsened transportation challenges, noting that the terminals are expected to ease congestion, improve safety, and regulate transport activities once operational.

The minister had earlier assured residents that operations would commence soon following the approval of a public-private partnership arrangement by the Federal Executive Council for the management of the facilities.
