The Rivers State Police Command has arrested a 31-year-old man, Kelechi Wufurum, for allegedly killing a commercial bus driver, Ifeanyi Abobo, in Ubima.

The police said the 51-year-old victim was lured to the community under the pretext of a transport job, unaware of the suspect’s alleged intentions.

The command’s spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed the development while briefing journalists at the headquarters along Moscow Road in Port Harcourt.

According to her, the suspect and the victim had an altercation before Wufurum allegedly attacked the driver near a forest using a stick and later a cutlass, inflicting fatal injuries.

“He hit him on the head, and when the victim tried to resist, he used a cutlass and struck him again. The victim collapsed, and he zoomed off with his minibus and sold both the vehicle and his mobile phone,” she said.

Iringe-Koko added that the Police Special Operations and Intelligence Team launched an investigation, leading to the arrest of the suspect and others linked to the crime.

Those arrested include the suspect’s cousin, Azubuike Oyemechi, who allegedly facilitated the sale, and the buyer of the vehicle, Ugo Ikenna.

The suspect reportedly confessed to luring the victim to a remote location, overpowering him, and making away with his minibus, which he sold for N2.4 million.

Police said investigations are ongoing, adding that all suspects will be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
