Kai Havertz scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner as Arsenal secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Sporting CP in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie in Lisbon.

The decisive moment came late at the Estádio José Alvalade, where Havertz latched onto a precise pass from Gabriel Martinelli to slot home from close range, handing the visitors a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg in north London.

Managed by Mikel Arteta, Arsenal entered the fixture under pressure following recent domestic setbacks, including defeats to Manchester City and Southampton. Despite an unconvincing display, the Premier League leaders showed resilience to grind out the result.

Sporting, buoyed by a strong home record, created several early chances, with Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya producing key saves to deny efforts from Maxi Araújo and Geny Catamo.

Arsenal struggled to find rhythm for much of the contest, with captain Martin Ødegaard and forward Leandro Trossard unable to convert limited opportunities. A goal from Martin Zubimendi was ruled out for offside, adding to the tension.

However, the introduction of substitutes proved decisive, as Martinelli’s late assist allowed Havertz to beat the offside trap and secure victory.

The result puts Arsenal in a strong position ahead of the second leg on April 15, as they aim to reach the semi-finals and continue their push for a first-ever Champions League title.
