ABIA ADC ELECTS NEW EXECUTIVE AS OGUN PARTY FACES LEADERSHIP CRISIS

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Saturday held state congresses in Ogun State and Abia State to elect new executives ahead of the 2027 general elections, amid internal divisions in Ogun State.
In Ogun, the party was split into parallel congresses following a leadership dispute, with two factions laying claim to legitimacy despite both remaining aligned with the national leadership led by former Senate President David Mark.
One faction, led by Deputy National Financial Secretary Dimeji Fabiyi, held its congress at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta under the supervision of a national committee chaired by Olatunji Shoyinka. The group elected Emmanuel Famojuro as state chairman.
Presenting the harmonised list of executives, Shoyinka said the process followed party guidelines and reflected broad stakeholder agreement.
Famojuro, in his acceptance speech, called for unity and promised to strengthen the party through grassroots mobilisation, stressing the importance of youths and women in its structure.
Fabiyi, however, criticised the immediate past leadership, accusing it of weakening the party and discouraging participation. He alleged that the party had become overly transactional but expressed optimism that the new leadership would redirect its course.

In contrast, the opposing faction led by Femi Soluade rejected the outcome, insisting it remains the authentic leadership after holding a separate congress at the party secretariat in Itoko, Abeokuta, supervised by national official Rasheed Salvador. Soluade declared his faction was returned unopposed and remains committed to delivering victory in 2027, dismissing rival claims as baseless.
Meanwhile, in Abia State, the ADC conducted a unified congress in Umuahia, where Kalu-Kalu Agu emerged as state chairman through a voice vote alongside other executives.

Agu pledged to prioritise reconciliation and unite all members, saying a divided house cannot succeed and vowing to bring aggrieved members back into the party.
Chairman of the Congress Committee, Fredrick Onwe, said the exercise followed party guidelines and expressed confidence in the party’s stability in Abia despite national-level challenges.
State Publicity Secretary Francess Ogbonnaya added that the party was preparing to field credible candidates for governorship and other positions in the coming elections.
The congresses come amid increasing political realignments within the ADC as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify.
