Borno State Specialist Hospital in Maiduguri is facing a severe blood shortage following an influx of civilian casualties linked to a military airstrike that reportedly killed over 30 people in Gubio Local Government Area of Borno State.

Reports indicate that at least 30 people were feared dead after the airstrike hit a weekly market in Jilli village, along the border between Borno State and Yobe State, on Saturday evening.

The attack at the busy Jilli Market reportedly caused panic among traders and residents, as explosions disrupted commercial activities in the area.

The strikes, executed on April 11, 2026, were carried out by the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI in coordination with the Nigerian Army, following an earlier operation that targeted and destroyed terrorist positions in the area.

Speaking with the Medical Director of the State Specialist Hospital, Maiduguri, Dr Shehu Muhammad, on Sunday, he said 21 persons had been admitted to the facility

According to him, the victims include five females and 16 males.

“Today, we received about 21 victims of a bomb blast as well as gunshot wounds from the town between Gubio and Geidam” he said.

“Most of the patients sustained different levels of injuries, including head trauma and other serious wounds. We have begun triaging them, and most have already been attended to, except for the critical cases. So far, out of the 21 patients, five are females and 16 are males,” the MD added.

He classified the injured victims into mild, moderate, and severe cases.

“The injuries vary in severity. We have mild, moderate, and severe cases. The severe cases require surgery, and some have already begun undergoing operations.”

He also noted that necessary treatment materials are available, though additional blood donations are urgently needed.

“So far, we have all the required supplies, and the patients have received the necessary first aid. Some of them needed specific units of blood before surgery, and that has been managed without issue for now.

“Muhammed said, ‘However, we are appealing to the public for blood donations. Ultimately, blood is what we will need most. Once we have sufficient blood, we will be able to handle the situation. We are in urgent need of blood.’

“He added, ‘There may still be additional victims who could be brought in.’”
