Fresh divisions have surfaced within the All Progressives Congress (APC) over the possible defection of Bala Mohammed, as consultations intensify ahead of a potential move from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Sources indicate that while some figures within the ruling party are quietly supporting the governor’s planned switch, others—particularly in the Bauchi chapter—are resisting, citing concerns over strategy, trust, and internal stability.

The development comes amid a series of high-level engagements by Mohammed with key APC stakeholders at both state and national levels, fuelling speculation that his defection may be imminent.

A member of the House of Representatives from Bauchi State, who spoke anonymously, confirmed that the governor has continued consultations following a recent meeting with APC lawmakers from the state. He noted that discussions are ongoing and that federal lawmakers have indicated willingness to work with Mohammed should he join the party.

The meeting, held at the governor’s Abuja residence, involved members of the Bauchi caucus in the House of Representatives and is seen as part of broader political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking after the engagement, Ismaila Dabo described the talks as productive, hinting at wider consultations across the North-East and beyond, with a unified position expected in due course.

Although no official announcement has been made, insiders suggest the governor’s frequent engagements reflect a calculated effort to secure acceptance and strengthen his political leverage within the APC.

Mohammed’s moves come against the backdrop of ongoing internal challenges within the PDP, which have triggered defections and uncertainty within the party ahead of the next general elections. Alongside Seyi Makinde, he remains one of the few influential PDP governors yet to formally switch allegiance.

Before his renewed engagement with the APC, Mohammed was reportedly exploring alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as part of a broader opposition coalition. However, his recent interactions suggest a shift toward the ruling party.

Despite the momentum, opposition within the APC in Bauchi is growing. A group known as the APC Solidarity Group and Allied Associations has openly rejected the governor’s possible entry, warning that it could disrupt party unity and weaken existing structures.

In a petition submitted to APC National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, the group raised concerns over Mohammed’s past criticisms of the party and the administration of Bola Tinubu, as well as doubts about his political loyalty and public perception.

They cautioned that admitting him could spark internal rivalry, create trust issues, and destabilise the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
