A Senior Legislative Aide to the Deputy Senate President, Rijo Shekari, has defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the Zango/Jaba Federal House of Representatives party primaries.
He announced his defection on Tuesday during an expanded caucus meeting of the PDP for Kaduna South Senatorial District held in Kafanchan, Kafanchan, where he was officially welcomed by party leaders.
Speaking after his defection, Shekari said the move followed extensive consultations with his supporters and political associates.
He explained, “I made this decision after wide consultations with my supporters and political associates. It became necessary for me to align with a platform that truly reflects my political ideals.”
He said his decision was motivated by his commitment to the independence and dignity of the Southern Kaduna people.
According to him, “My commitment remains the independence and dignity of the Southern Kaduna people, and I believe the PDP offers the right platform to pursue that goal.”
The former aide also revealed his intention to contest for the Zango/Jaba Federal Constituency seat under the banner of the Peoples Democratic Party.
“I intend to present myself for service and to represent the Zango/Jaba Federal Constituency under the PDP, subject to the will of the people and the outcome of the party primaries,” Shekari said.
He explained that the Peoples Democratic Party provides a better platform for him to contribute to democratic growth and effective representation.
“I am appreciative of the opportunities I had within the APC, but current political realities have made it necessary for me to move forward,” he added.
Leaders of the PDP in the district welcomed his defection, describing it as a welcome and positive development for the party.
One party leader noted that his experience in governance and legislative affairs would strengthen grassroots mobilisation efforts.
The party also assured him of full integration into its structure, expressing confidence that his entry would further energise its base ahead of the primaries.
