Various conventional and non-conventional security agencies in Osun State on Tuesday received 300 motorcycles donated by the state chapter of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria to boost their operations.
While accepting the donation at the Osun State Command headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in Osogbo, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, praised President Bola Tinubu for granting financial autonomy to local government councils.
He noted that the motorcycles would improve the effectiveness of security agencies in the state, stressing that tackling the nation’s security challenges requires cooperation, partnership, and continuous support from all stakeholders.
“The motorcycles will significantly boost our operational capacity, especially in difficult-to-access areas, while also improving response time and patrol efficiency,” the CP said.
He assured that the motorcycles would be properly utilized, adding, “On behalf of the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector-General of Police, and other security agencies present, I sincerely appreciate the Association of Local Government of Nigeria for this meaningful and impactful support. Be assured that the motorcycles will be used responsibly.”
He further expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for making the initiative possible through the grant of autonomy to local governments.
Speaking for the donors, the Osun ALGON chairman, Samuel Idowu, said the councils were able to procure the motorcycles due to the financial autonomy they now enjoy.
He added that the donation demonstrates how empowered local governments can serve as vital pillars in strengthening national security and development.
According to him, a total of 300 motorcycles are being distributed, with each of the 30 local government areas receiving 10. In each council, the Nigeria Police Force will get three motorcycles, the DSS two, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps two, while vigilantes, hunters, and community security groups will receive one each.
Emphasizing the significance of the initiative, Idowu noted that the motorcycles would boost mobility, enhance response time, and enable security personnel to access remote and hard-to-reach areas, particularly in rural communities. He said the effort is geared toward strengthening community policing and ensuring no part of the state is left exposed to security threats.
He also urged the benefiting agencies to use the motorcycles responsibly and maintain them properly.
Meanwhile, the development has sparked political tension between the Osun State Government and the All Progressives Congress. The state government maintains that the APC-elected council chairmen are unlawfully occupying their positions, while the party insists its officials are still within their legal tenure and has taken the matter to court to determine whether a new election can be conducted before their term expires.
