President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday urged the Nigeria Revenue Service to build public confidence by upholding fairness, trust, and accountability as he inaugurated its new headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking at the ceremony held at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, the President said the service must earn Nigerians’ trust and international respect through transparent and equitable revenue administration.

He stressed that the agency should “embody trust, ensure fairness, and demonstrate that government can be accountable, responsive, and earn confidence at home and respect abroad.”

The Nigeria Revenue Service, formerly the Federal Inland Revenue Service, was created following the passage of the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 and the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, as part of the administration’s broader tax reform and fiscal policy agenda.

The reforms, which generated extensive debate in the National Assembly before being passed, broadened the agency’s responsibilities beyond tax collection to include coordination of non-tax revenue, improved service delivery, governance structure, and compliance management.

According to the Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, the newly inaugurated headquarters—a modern three-tower facility designed to house more than 3,000 staff—is part of efforts to upgrade the infrastructure needed for efficient fiscal administration in Nigeria.

He added that the agency, with over 18,000 personnel globally, is also tasked with revenue legislation support and implementation functions.

The inauguration ceremony featured goodwill messages from Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen, and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, who was represented by Minister of State Taiwo Oyedele, alongside the Managing Director of CCECC Nigeria, CCECC Nigeria, Guan Shuai.

The event also featured a documentary titled “The Journey to NRS,” which highlighted the transition from the former revenue agency structure to the newly established institution.

In his welcome address, the Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, described the commissioning as a significant milestone in efforts to strengthen revenue administration, broaden the tax base, and enhance service delivery in Nigeria.
