Residents of Hadejia in Jigawa State are set to mark their historic resistance to colonial rule with a two-day event scheduled for April 24 and 25 in Hadejia town.
The Chairman of the Organising Committee and Galadiman Hadejia, Alhaji Usman Abdul’aziz, announced this during a press briefing.
He explained that the commemoration is intended to promote courage, strengthen cultural values, and preserve the rich heritage of the Hadejia people.
He explained that the commemoration is based on a historic 1906 confrontation in which more than 800 Hadejia warriors, including the then Emir Alhaji Muhammad Mai Shahada, lost their lives. He added that British forces also recorded casualties during the encounter, including their commanding officer.
Abdul’aziz also disclosed that the programme will feature guided tours of significant historical sites, as well as the launch of a book detailing the events. The book was authored by the late Professor Haruna Wakili in collaboration with other historians.
