Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has named Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi as the greatest footballer of all time.
The Spain international said Messi is widely respected for his achievements in the sport.
Yamal made the statement after winning the Best Young Athlete award at the 2026 Laureus Awards held in Madrid on Monday.
“Lamine Yamal said, as quoted by Barça Universal, that ‘Lionel Messi is the greatest footballer of all time. If he isn’t the greatest athlete ever, then he is certainly among the very best.’
He added that Messi is universally respected for everything he has achieved and expressed his desire to emulate his career path.
Messi remains the most decorated footballer in history, with over 45 trophies, including the FIFA World Cup.
Now 38, the Argentina forward is approaching the final stage of his career and is widely expected to feature in what could be his last World Cup in the upcoming summer.
