TCN RECORDS 276 CASES OF TOWER VANDALISM BETWEEN 2022 AND 2025

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has disclosed that it recorded about 276 cases of vandalism targeting its transmission infrastructure nationwide between 2022 and 2025.
The General Manager of TCN’s Lagos Region, Engr. Adeshina Adeonipekun, made this known on Wednesday during a public sensitisation programme on the dangers of vandalism held at Itori in Ewekoro Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Adeonipekun said the company had intensified community engagement and security measures to reduce attacks on transmission towers, noting a significant improvement in 2025.
“From 2022 to 2025, we recorded nothing less than 276 tower vandalism cases. This year, with the support of communities and the proactiveness of our staff, we have been able to minimise the issue of vandalism to about 40,” he said.
He explained that TCN has been conducting regular sensitisation campaigns across different communities to encourage residents to protect critical national infrastructure.
“We put measures in place, one of which is our yearly sensitisation programme held at different locations to curb vandalism. This enables us to collaborate with host communities to safeguard our infrastructure,” he added.
Adeonipekun noted that collaboration with security agencies, including the Office of the National Security Adviser and other security operatives, had contributed to arrests of some perpetrators.
Also speaking, TCN Principal Manager, Lines (Lagos Region), Engr. Kuye Emmanuel, said additional protective measures had been introduced, including community-based security arrangements.
“Apart from this awareness, we arrange private vigilantes from zone to zone within the community that are being paid monthly to safeguard our lines,” he said.
He added that farmers in affected communities were also being supported as part of efforts to encourage cooperation and vigilance.
The traditional ruler of Itori, HRM Abdul Fatai Akorede Akamo, commended TCN for the engagement and called for such sensitisation programmes to be held annually.
Similarly, a representative of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Deputy Superintendent of Corps, Mrs. Balogun Olushola, urged residents to report suspicious activities around transmission infrastructure and avoid aiding vandals.
The stakeholders reiterated that protecting transmission assets is critical to ensuring stable electricity supply across the country.
