President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called for unity, discipline, and internal democracy within the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the party commences its nationwide primary elections ahead of the 2026 election cycle.
In a statement marking the commencement of the primaries, Tinubu described the exercise as a “historic moment” for the ruling party, noting that it represents its fourth electoral cycle since formation.
He said the APC was founded on the principles of progressive politics, consensus-building, and selfless service, adding that those ideals must continue to guide its conduct during the primaries.
“The primary elections, kicking off with those for House of Representatives aspirants tomorrow and culminating in the presidential primaries on May 25, 2026, are not mere exercises to produce our standard bearers. They are a referendum on our unity, resilience and strength as a party,” the President said.
Tinubu acknowledged ongoing efforts within the party to produce consensus candidates, describing it as a positive step that could reduce internal rancour. However, he urged members to ensure fairness where consensus is not achieved.
He called on aspirants to embrace sportsmanship, warning against divisive conduct that could undermine party cohesion.
“We cannot afford rancorous conduct or the debasement of our democracy and party unity. In every contest, there will be a winner and a loser,” he said.
The President also urged winners of the primaries to extend olive branches to those who lose, stressing that politics should not be a “do-or-die affair” or a zero-sum game.
Tinubu further charged party leaders, governors, and officials to ensure a level playing field for all aspirants and uphold internal fairness in the conduct of the primaries.
He also emphasised the importance of youth and women inclusion, calling for greater participation of both groups in the party’s selection process.
“The inclusion of women and youth is dear to my heart. We cannot afford to relegate the two significant demographics of our population,” he said.
On security, the President advised the Police and other security agencies to remain professional and limit their role to ensuring peaceful conduct during the primaries.
He concluded by wishing all aspirants success, expressing hope that the process would strengthen the APC ahead of the general elections.
