A Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Yilewa Joseph, has sentenced Halima Haliru Umar, an alleged arms courier linked to bandit networks, to 20 years in prison.

The convict was arrested in 2025 by the Department of State Services (DSS) in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State with 302 rounds of AK-47 ammunition and ₦57,000 in her possession.

She was arraigned on charges bordering on terrorism and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, and pleaded guilty to counts three and four.

In his judgment, Justice Joseph noted that the defendant admitted to the prosecution’s facts and failed to present any evidence in her defence, leading to her conviction and sentencing to 20 years imprisonment on the two counts.

The ruling followed a plea for leniency by the defence counsel, Hamzat Dantani, who urged the court to consider that the defendant did not delay proceedings.

The court adjourned the matter to July 9, 2026, for continuation of trial on counts one and two, to which the defendant pleaded not guilty.

Authorities say the prosecution forms part of ongoing efforts to disrupt illegal arms supply chains and dismantle bandit and terrorist networks across the country.
