Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez has again expressed support for Lamine Yamal after the footballer waved the Palestinian flag during a championship parade.
Sánchez, in a post on social media on Sunday, defended Yamal against criticism over the gesture.
“Those who believe that waving a country’s flag is ‘inciting hatred’ are either insane or blinded by their own shame.
“Lamine merely expressed the solidarity of millions of Spaniards with Palestine. This is another reason for us to be proud of him,” he wrote.
Earlier, during a joint press conference in Madrid, Sánchez was asked about Yamal waving the Palestinian flag during the title celebration parade.
Responding, the Spanish Prime Minister reiterated the position of the Spanish government, stating, “Spain has recognized the State of Palestine.”
He also restated Spain’s longstanding position on the conflict, noting that while the country condemned Hamas attacks from the beginning, it has also strongly criticized Israel’s military actions in Gaza, describing them as “genocide,” and opposing illegal settlements in the West Bank.
