UPDATE: CUSTOMS INTERCEPT CONTAINERS LADEN WITH COCAINE, ARMS AMMUNITION, OTHERS AT TIN CAN ISLAND PORT

The Nigeria Customs Service announced on Thursday that it has recently stopped four containers entering Tin Can Island Port Complex in Lagos State, South West Nigeria, that were carrying illegal drugs and weapons from South Africa and Canada.
This was revealed by Service Comptroller General Mr. Adewale Adeniyi during a press conference regarding recent seizures that were documented by agents from Tin Can Island Command working with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
Adeniyi stated that agents of Tin Can Island Command reported several successfully carrying out multiple seizures of illegal drugs, weapons, and ammunition at different locations, indicating a coordinated attempt to stop illegal entry into the nation through a variety of routes and modes of transportation.
He claims that these interception activities have exposed a worrying pattern in which criminal networks work together to undermine the authority of the organisations entrusted with preventing the arrival of these illegal drugs.
While highlighting the number of items impounded, the Customs top brass mentioned that “65 packets of Colarado Indica weighing 32.5kg seized from 1X40FT Container No. UACU 534833/6 imported from Canada.
“17 packets weighing 16.690kg confirmed to be Cocaine, 151 packets Colarado Indica weighing 107 kg, One (1) piece Gen2 Air soft pistol with serial No. 471908, empty magazine, 49 rounds of 7.62 mm live ammunition, 197 rounds of 9mm live ammunition, precursor chemicals for the manufacture of crystal methamphetamine, 8bags weighing 25kg tartaric acid, 100kegs of unspecified substances seized from 1x40ft Container No. MSCU 458177/0 imported from Durban South Africa.
“40packets weighing39.7kg confirmed to be Cocaine, 1026 packets weighing 688.2kg confirmed to be Colarado Indica, Two (2) pistols without serial numbers, one pistol with SerialNo. AZYSRA6YSO12101181, three (3) empty magazines, 275rounds of 5.5mm M16 Tavor live ammunition, Six rounds of 9mm blank ammunition seized from in 1x40ft container No. THRU 796807/1imported from Durban South Africa.
Parallel to this, Adeniyi observed that the continuous cooperation between the Customs and NDLEA has continuously produced favourable outcomes, adding that the synergy demonstrates the efficacy of combining resources and intelligence, reaffirming the dedication of both organisations to securing the country’s borders and defending its citizens against the dangers posed by illegal substances.
The head of customs acknowledged that over the last seven months of his administration, strategic partnerships with stakeholders have been steadfastly prioritised in recognition of the threats posed by criminal activities. The purpose of this deliberate focus is to harness the specialised expertise of the partnership in a way that enhances its ability to fulfil its core mandates.
” Just as criminals find strength in collaboration, government agencies must equally appreciate the advantages of working collectively to fulfil their statutory responsibilities. ” Adeniyi stressed pointing out that “The individuals linked to these seizures have not been disclosed as investigations into the criminal network are ongoing. ”
He went on to say that the NCS is dedicated to doing everything within its power to guarantee that those who engage in these illegal acts suffer the full weight of the law.
He also expressed gratitude to the officers and soldiers of the command for their tremendous contributions to the things that were confiscated, but he also stated that NCS and NDLEA are still fully committed to strengthening their current partnerships in order to eradicate criminal elements from society.
