NEWS: OYO STATE GOVERNMENT APPREHENDS 32 BEGGARS FOR ALLEGED VIOLATION OF LAW

Thirty-two accused beggars in Ibadan have been taken into custody by the Oyo State administration for allegedly breaking the state’s rule against street begging.
This was said by Mrs. Toyin Balogun, the commissioner for women’s affairs and social inclusion, at the Akinyele resettlement camp in Ibadan, where the beggars were housed.
She said that between 2:30 and 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, the suspects were taken into custody following a special raid conducted by Ministry authorities and security personnel in the city.
Hon. Balogun claims that the state government disapproves of the threat that has turned into a social eyesore and emphasises that it is illegal to beg on the streets of Oyo State.
Hon. Balogun emphasised that the threat poses a serious risk to beggars’ lives because fast-moving cars have the potential to knock them down or crush them. It also degrades the aesthetics of our highways.
The Commissioner gave an explanation of how the State Government is trying to improve the conditions at the Akinyele Resettlement Centre for this group of persons, noting that they will receive food assistance while receiving vocational training in basic but lucrative crafts to supplement their income.
In a parallel move, the government of Oyo State has promised to eradicate street begging once and for all.
Architect Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, stated this on a Thursday visit by the Egbeda Local Government.
A suspected “co-ordinator of beggars” (names withheld), who specialises in transporting beggars from the northern region of the country to the state, was confronted by him during the tour and told to stop.
The Honourable Commissioner revealed that, in violation of Oyo State Government policies and regulations, His Excellency has found evidence of beggars infiltrating and converging within the city. He termed the threat extremely traumatising.
He promised that street beggars would now be forced to return to their home state if they did not accept the kind offer of the Oyo State Governor’s specially constructed housing for them at Moniya, in the Akinyele Local Government.
The Honourable Commissioner said that the relevant decisions have been made in consultation with his counterpart, Mrs. Toyin Balogun, the Honourable Commissioner for Women’s Affairs, Community Development, and Social Welfare.
He promised that the state would catch and prosecute all of these shameless consultants and vendors who brought in beggars.
Architect Mogbonjubola reaffirmed the administration led by His Excellency, Engineer Seyi Makinde,’s commitment to promoting and guaranteeing a perfect, safe environment for everybody.
