EFCC ARRAIGNS IMPEACHED OGUN SPEAKER OLUOMO, TWO OTHERS OVER ALLEGED N2.5BN FRAUD
Olakunle Oluomo, the impeached Speaker of the Ogun House of Assembly, along with two other key career officers of the house, Dayo Samuel and Adeyemo Adedeji, were arraigned before a Federal High Court on Monday in Oke Mosan, Abeokuta, the capital of the state.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission brought Oluomo and the two to court on charges of embezzlement of N2.5 billion in public funds.
It is believed that Oluomo perpetrated this financial scam in 2022 while serving as Speaker of the Assembly.
Meanwhile, the former Speaker was last week removed by 18 out of 26 lawmakers over allegations bordering on financial misappropriation, highhandedness, gross misconduct, arrogance, poor leadership style, lack of focus and transparency, and pitching members against themselves.
Oluomo, however, has argued that his removal was unlawful and that he had already filed a lawsuit to contest his impeachment at the state high court.
On Monday, shortly after the trio entered the dock, the court discovered that the counsel for the anti-graft agency could not make it to court.
However, Justice Agatha Okeke, the presiding judge, adjourned the case till February 29 and March 1.
Oluomo was detained by the EFCC in September 2022 and charged with embezzlement of N2.5 billion purportedly belonging to the Assembly, with case number FHC/AB/61C/2022.
Oluomo was arraigned with Taiwo Adeyemo, the Clerk of the House, and Oladayo Samuel, the Director of Finance.
The Speaker and other individuals were charged by the antigraft agency with fabricating receipts and signatures in order to siphon off billions of naira from the legislative assembly.
After entering a not guilty plea, they were instructed to present their travel documents at the court registry, but in the meantime, they were given bail.
