UPDATE: NINE ABDUCTED DELTA STUDENTS REGAIN FREEDOM
The Delta State Police Command has rescued nine students who were abducted along the East-West Road in Ughelli, Delta State.
It was reported that the students were abducted on Monday.
Confirming the rescue, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Edafe Bright, wrote on his X handle late Monday while quoting Channels Television’s report, “All nine of the victims have regained their freedom pls.”
The students were said to be travelling in a minibus before the abduction.
The PPRO had told newsmen that the abductees “may have been students who were returning from their school in Calabar, Cross River State on Friday night.”
The bus driver was said to be unhurt, adding that the kidnappers hadn’t demanded ransom while the police operatives had swung into action.
“The command is aware of this ugly incident, and we are doing all it takes to ensure that they are rescued unhurt,” the state PPRO tweeted on his X handle earlier on Monday.
This is coming less than a month after 137 schoolchildren of the LEA Primary School and Government Secondary School were abducted in Kaduna State on March 7.
The abduction which lasted for some weeks, claimed the life of a teacher, Mallam Abubakar, who lost his life due to some complications while in captivity.
However, after their rescue, the Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani promised to offer free education to the schoolchildren, adding that they (the students) were taken through counselling and therapy by psychologists.
