RIVERS EX-LG BOSSES IGNORE POLICE ORDER, STAGE PROTESTS
On Monday, the previous council chairs of 21 of the 23 Local Government Areas (LGA) in Rivers State conducted protests at their respective council locations.
Former Chairman Onengiyeofori George and his followers marched through the streets of Buguma, the council headquarters of the Asari-Toru LGA, while dancing to songs in support of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike.
They held up signs pleading with the police to keep taking over the council building. There were several inscriptions, including “There’s No Vacancy in Asari-Toru Council” and “Sim Fubara Can’t Continue to Act As He Likes.”
The Rivers State Police Command had given advice against protests, but the pro-Wike former LGA heads nevertheless staged demonstrations in their local councils.
Some people protested outside the Akuku-Toru LGA council headquarters in Abonnema, supporting the police’s ongoing closure of council property.
MURIC WARNS SOKOTO GOVERNOR, SAYS HE SHOULD NOT TOUCH THE SULTAN
Following the crisis that broke out over the former LGA chairmen’s three-year term expiration, the police last Tuesday took control of the council secretariats of the 23 LGAs in the oil-rich South-South. Following the chaos, three deaths have been reported.
In order to forestall any possibility of a breakdown in law and order, Governor Siminalayi Fubara quickly swore in 23 interim chairmen. However, the police have persisted in barricading the council premises in each LGA, barring entry for either party.
