UPDATE: FG BANS SINGLE-USE PLASTICS IN MINISTRIES, OTHERS
On Tuesday, the federal government outlawed single-use plastics in all federal departments, ministries, and organizations.
Speaking to the media at the Presidential Villa during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, which was presided over by President Bola Tinubu, Minister of State for the Environment Iziaq Salako made the following statement:.
“If you look at the National Policy on Plastic Waste Management which was adopted in 2020, it envisages that by January 2025, some categories of plastics will be banned in Nigeria and most of them are single-use, plastic spoons, straws, pet bottles, water sachets and so on.
“What the Federal Government is doing is preparing the minds of Nigerians and leading by example,” the minister said.
Salako stated that the prohibition was in line with the government’s resolve to address the three pressing issues facing the nation: plastic pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change.

According to the minister, plastic garbage pollutes the oceans, clogs drains, causes flooding, and has an adverse effect on the ecosystem and human health.
In January, the Lagos State Government outlawed Styrofoam and single-use plastics in the state.
