RC Lens claimed their first-ever French Cup title on Friday after defeating Nice 3–1 in the final at the Stade de France.

Florian Thauvin, a member of France’s 2018 World Cup-winning squad, played a decisive role in the victory, scoring once and providing an assist for Odsonne Edouard as Lens raced into a 2–0 lead before halftime.

Nice responded just before the break through teenager Djibril Coulibaly, who netted his first senior goal, reducing the deficit to 2–1. The Ligue 1 side then came close to equalising in the second half, striking the woodwork twice in a tense spell of pressure.

However, Lens sealed the win in the 78th minute when substitute Abdallah Sima converted from close range, sparking celebrations among their supporters inside the nearly full 80,000-capacity stadium.

The victory marks a historic milestone for the northern French club, who had previously lost three French Cup finals, including their most recent appearance in 1998. That same year, Lens won their only Ligue 1 title.

This season has been particularly strong for Lens, as they finished second in Ligue 1 behind Paris Saint-Germain, securing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Nice, meanwhile, endured disappointment on the night and continue to struggle in a difficult campaign. The club finished third from bottom in Ligue 1 and must now compete in a two-legged relegation play-off against Saint-Étienne to secure their top-flight status.
