NAFDAC RAIDS ENUGU MARKET, SHUTS 100 SHOPS SELLING FAKE ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES
In Ogbete Main Market, the National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has closed at least 100 stores.
Martins Iluyomade, the agency’s director for the Southeast, disclosed this on Monday.
He clarified that the owners of the stores were reportedly involved in the sale of phony alcoholic beverages, which is why they were closed down.
According to Iluyomade, the agency detained four traders who were allegedly peddling phony beverages and seized a truckload of contaminated goods during the raid.
“We stormed the popular Ogbete Main Market, Enugu in Enugu State since Friday and have shut down 100 shops which have been identified for selling fake alcoholic beverages.
“Arrests were made and the suspects are currently in custody,” Mr. Iluyomade said.
“This fake wine and alcoholic beverages are being sold to unsuspected customers and the general public but we are determined to rid the market of these unwholesome products,” he stated.
The NAFDAC chief added that the arrested suspects would be charged to court at the end of their ongoing investigation.
