A 30-year-old private school teacher, Nathaniel Baiyegun, has been arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force for allegedly killing a 16-year-old West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidate identified as Florence, a former student.

Police sources said the suspect allegedly lured the teenager to the scene of her death under the guise of attending an academic coaching class before abducting her.

According to the source, Baiyegun later demanded a ransom of ₦500,000 from the girl’s father after the alleged killing, which he reportedly admitted spending on online sports betting.

“The suspect allegedly reconnected with the teenager about a year after she left his former school and attempted to force her into a relationship with his friend… He kidnapped and kept her in an uncompleted building before administering an overdose of D5 sleeping tablets on her,” the source said.

He was also alleged to have dumped her body in a river in Ogijo after believing she had died.

In a confessional statement, Baiyegun claimed he had no romantic relationship with the victim, describing her as a former student who occasionally visited him and later reconnected with him.

He narrated how he allegedly introduced her to a friend identified as Sola, who had shown interest in her, and how the situation escalated into a planned fake kidnapping intended to extort money from her family.

According to him, the victim was taken to an uncompleted building where he allegedly used her phone to demand ₦3 million ransom from her father.

He further claimed he administered sleeping tablets after she complained of inability to rest, and later discovered she was in distress when he returned.

“I quickly stopped a bike and took her to a river… and dumped her body there,” he was quoted as saying.

The suspect also admitted receiving ₦500,000 from the victim’s father after the ransom demand, adding that he spent most of the money on betting and regretted his actions.

Reacting to the incident, spokesperson for the Ogun State Police Command, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said the arrest was the result of
