JUST IN: S’COURT BAR GOVERNORS FROM DISSOLVING LG COUNCILS
Governors are not permitted to dissolve the nation’s democratically elected Local Government (LG) councils, according to the Supreme Court.
In a historic ruling on Thursday, the Supreme Court stated that doing so would violate the 1999 Constitution.
The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Federal Government, requesting an injunction to stop governors from arbitrary dissolution of democratically elected councils. The AGF filed a lawsuit on 27 grounds.
The AGF’s decision to bring the lawsuit was resisted by the 36 state governors, who are the suit’s defendants.
However, the Supreme Court declared that the governors, who were the defendants in the lawsuit, had wasted their time.
The nation’s highest court also granted the 774 local government bodies financial autonomy.
He overruled the defendants’ (state governors’) initial objections.
From now on, local government allocations from the Federation Account should be paid directly to them rather than the state government’s coffers, as instructed by the highest court.
