CANADA REDUCES INTERNATIONAL STUDENT, FOREIGN WORKER PERMITS
This is the result of multiple previous rounds of limitations meant to rein in record immigration levels that earlier this year drove Canada’s population beyond 41 million.
Canada declared on Wednesday that in an effort to reduce the number of temporary residents living in the nation, it will reduce the number of international student permits granted for the following year and tighten regulations governing foreign workers.
This is the result of multiple previous rounds of limitations meant to rein in record immigration levels that earlier this year drove Canada’s population beyond 41 million.
The administration of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has stated that the nation’s housing market, labor market, and social services are being strained as a result of the increasing immigration rate.
“It is a privilege to come to Canada. It is not a right,” Immigration Minister Marc Miller told a news conference.
Ottawa expects to grant study licenses to foreign students for 437,000 of them in 2025, as opposed to 485,000 of them this year and over 500,000 in 2023.
Additionally, it is imposing new restrictions on work licenses for certain foreign workers and international students’ spouses. Furthermore, in an effort to curb the rise in bogus or denied asylum requests, more inspections will be conducted prior to travel visas being issued.
The government in Ottawa has already said that it will lower the percentage of temporary residents—which was 6.8% in April—to 5% of the total population.
