MAN UTD SET TO CONFIRM AMORIM AS NEW MANAGER
Agency Report
Ruben Amorim is poised to be named as Manchester United’s new manager on Thursday after reaching an agreement with Sporting Lisbon, according to reports.
According to The Athletic, the 39-year-old will remain with the Portuguese league leaders for the next three games, including next week’s Champions League showdown against Manchester City.
He is likely to take over at Old Trafford during the November international break, with his first game coming away to Ipswich on November 24.
According to Sky Sports, the Premier League club paid Sporting an additional one million euros on top of his 10 million euro ($11 million) departure clause in exchange for his early release.
Sporting informed the Lisbon stock exchange on Tuesday that United was willing to meet the release clause.
United ended Erik ten Hag’s two-year term as manager on Monday, following a 2-1 loss to West Ham, which dropped them to 14th in the Premier League.
Amorim soon emerged as United’s top candidate.
Ruud van Nistelrooy, United’s interim manager, led the club to a 5-2 League Cup triumph over Leicester on Wednesday.
“I came here as an assistant to help the club,” said Van Nistelrooy. “I’m helping as long as I’m needed and in the future, in any capacity, I’m here to help the club build towards the future.”
Despite spending lavishly in the transfer market this summer, Ten Hag paid the price for United’s slow start to the season.
Prior to the win over Leicester, they had only won one of their previous eight games across all competitions.
