JUDICIARY WORKERS IN BENUE SHUT DOWN COURTS OVER N75,000 MINIMUM WAGE
The state High Court in Makurdi has been locked down by members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria, Benue State chapter, due to the failure to implement the new minimum wage.
Members of the union blocked the gate and prevented access to the premises when our correspondent visited the Makurdi high court.
Jooli David, the state union’s assistant secretary, claimed that the action was brought about by the failure to pay members the new N75,000 minimum salary.
According to David, in response to the failure to pay the new minimum wage, the union notified members of indefinite strike action on Friday.
Starting at the end of November, the state administration started enforcing the new minimum wage of N75,000.
The union stated that the state chapter of the union had no choice but to go on strike starting on December 6 in accordance with the national body’s and the Nigeria Labour Congress’s directive to begin indefinite strike action on December 2.
The union in the state has issued a letter to the state governor, captioned, ‘Notification of Indefinite Strike Action Over Non-Implementation of New Minimum Wage”
Part of the letter read, “All Judiciary Staff across Benue State are by this notice directed to withdraw their services and at home until further directive from the state branch of the union.”
According to David, the union’s leadership will discuss the matter with the Head of Service later today.
The Nigeria Labour Congress’s state chairman, Terungwa Igbe, was contacted and stated that the union was aware of the strike but would not provide an explanation.
