CJN URGES NBA TO DEFEND JUDICIAL OFFICERS, CONDEMNS FRIVOLOUS PETITIONS AGAINST JUDGES

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has urged the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) to take a more active role in safeguarding the integrity of the judiciary.

This call was made in a statement released by the CJN’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Tobi Soniyi.

Addressing concerns raised by members of the NBA Bar and Bench Forum over the need for better protection of judicial officers, the CJN emphasized that many corruption allegations against judges are without merit and lack evidence.

Justice Kekere-Ekun highlighted that some individuals file petitions merely to intimidate or pressure judges. She noted that judges often suffer emotional distress even after being cleared of wrongdoing following investigations.

While encouraging the submission of legitimate complaints to the National Judicial Council (NJC), the CJN cautioned against the misuse of petitioning, insisting that allegations must be backed with solid proof.

She also expressed disappointment at the NBA’s silence in the face of unsubstantiated attacks on judges and criticized lawyers who publicly condemn judicial decisions without first thoroughly reviewing the rulings.

Furthermore, Justice Kekere-Ekun called on senior lawyers to guide and mentor younger colleagues, promoting professionalism and ethical conduct within the legal profession.

In response, the Chairman of the NBA Bar and Bench Forum, Dr. Richard Oma Ahonaruogho, echoed the CJN’s concerns, urging the NJC to filter out baseless petitions and suggesting that such actions should come with penalties. He also appealed for the CJN’s support in fostering mutual respect between legal practitioners and the judiciary.
