There was panic in Oko, Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State on Sunday night, after gunmen shot and killed a popular beer parlour operator near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko.

The tragic incident occurred near a well-known pizza outlet opposite the Polytechnic. Eyewitnesses say the victim was ambushed by yet-to-be-identified assailants while driving to his place of business. The attackers reportedly double-crossed his vehicle and opened fire, shooting him twice in the chest before fleeing the scene.

One eyewitness, who spoke to PUNCH Metro on condition of anonymity, described the scene as chaotic.

“There was pandemonium near the Oko Polytechnic when armed hoodlums stormed from nowhere, double-crossed the beer parlour owner, shot him twice in the chest and fled, leaving him lifeless in his car. His brother, who was among the onlookers, later drove the corpse to the police station,” the source said.

A video circulating online shows the immediate aftermath of the incident, with a crowd gathered around the victim’s car as his brother took control of the vehicle and transported the body to a nearby police station.

Confirming the incident, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, described it as a cult-related killing. He disclosed that one suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder and is currently undergoing interrogation.

“It was a cult-related killing. Following a swift police response led by the Divisional Police Officer, one suspect was arrested. The victim’s body has been deposited at the morgue and his vehicle recovered from the scene,” Ikenga said.

He added that investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided as developments unfold.

The police spokesperson also reiterated the command’s position on rising violent crimes in the state, noting that residents now agree that the perpetrators are not the so-called “unknown gunmen” but known criminal elements who have refused to change their ways.

“Ndi Anambra have shown greater resolve and commitment by working with the police and other security agencies to identify and root out criminal elements from our communities,” Ikenga stated.

To enhance public safety, the police say they have intensified surveillance and patrols across the state. Ikenga encouraged residents to report suspicious activity and reach out for assistance when needed.
