2027: SDP REJECTS COALITION NEGOTIATIONS, FOCUSES ON VOTER MOBILISATION

A former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewole Adebayo, has dissociated the party from ongoing opposition coalition discussions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He stated that the party does not consider elite political alliances as a viable path to unseating the ruling party, instead emphasizing the importance of mobilising disengaged Nigerian voters.
In a statement released by his media team, Adebayo also argued that many of the coalition efforts lack credibility, discipline, and a unified set of values.
“Strategic partners in an election are not necessarily politicians; the real partners are segments of society who have been excluded from the process,” he said.
He described voter apathy as a major challenge, pointing out that a significant portion of registered voters did not participate in the last general election.
According to him, any meaningful political alliance should prioritise engaging this disengaged population rather than focusing on power-sharing arrangements among political elites.
“If you want to build a coalition, you must locate the 80 per cent who did not show up and understand why they stayed away,” he added.
Adebayo also expressed doubts about ongoing coalition efforts, cautioning that partnerships with individuals lacking accountability could erode public confidence.
He revealed that although the Social Democratic Party has engaged in discussions with some parties, many of the talks collapsed due to internal crises within those groups.
He said the party is instead working towards a “civic coalition” that would involve grassroots organisations, professional associations, and ordinary citizens.
“Our type of coalition is one where civic groups and everyday Nigerians begin to get involved,” he said.
He added that formal political alliances may only be realistic after the party primaries.
Adebayo reiterated that the Social Democratic Party is focused on more than just electoral victory, emphasizing the importance of governance rooted in accountability and strong principles.
