LIVERPOOL SEAL £116M DEAL FOR FLORIAN WIRTZ IN POTENTIAL BRITISH RECORD TRANSFER

Liverpool have completed the blockbuster signing of German midfield sensation Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £116 million — a transfer that could become the most expensive in British football history.
According to BBC Sport, the agreement includes a guaranteed £100 million base fee, with a further £16 million in performance-related add-ons. The additional payments hinge on Liverpool achieving sustained elite-level success and would only then eclipse Chelsea’s £107 million purchase of Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in 2023.
While the £100 million base equals the initial fee Chelsea paid for Moises Caicedo, the Wirtz deal could ultimately surpass that if all clauses are triggered, positioning it as a landmark transfer in Premier League history.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder, known for his creative brilliance and tactical intelligence, attracted interest from Manchester City and Bayern Munich, but Liverpool emerged as front-runners after City reportedly withdrew due to the high costs.
Wirtz leaves Bayer Leverkusen after a remarkable spell, having made his debut at 17 and scored 57 goals in 197 appearances. He was instrumental in Leverkusen’s historic Bundesliga title win in 2024 and has already earned 31 caps for Germany, netting seven goals since his international debut in 2021.
Highly regarded for his versatility, Wirtz can operate centrally or drift inside from the left, with his vision, line-breaking passes, and ability to find tight spaces marking him as one of Europe’s most gifted young players. His arrival adds both creativity and scoring potential to Liverpool’s midfield under new leadership following Jurgen Klopp’s departure.
Though questions remain about how he will adapt to the Premier League’s pace and physicality, Wirtz’s strong work ethic and technical quality are expected to make him a key figure at Anfield.
Liverpool fans will get their first glimpse of the club’s record signing when the Reds begin their pre-season preparations ahead of the 2025–26 campaign.
