FIRE SERVICE AVERTS DISASTER AS PETROL TANKER FALLS, SPILLS CONTENTS ON OYO/OGBOMOSO EXPRESSWAY
Agency Report
Tragedy was averted on Thursday after operatives of the Oyo State Fire Service swiftly responded to a petrol tanker accident along the Oyo/Ogbomoso Expressway, preventing what could have been a major explosion.
The incident occurred at Onigari village around 12:20 p.m. when a 45,000-litre capacity petrol tanker lost control while navigating potholes and overturned by the roadside, causing its highly flammable contents to spill.
An eyewitness, Remi Olasunkanmi, told PUNCH Metro that the quick deployment of emergency responders saved the day. “Immediate intervention and deployment of the fire service men saved the day—the petrol tanker would have gone up in flames,” he said.
Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, said the Oyo Zonal Command responded promptly to a distress call received at 12:34 p.m.
“Our men, led by CFS Tijani, arrived to find an IVECO trailer tanker with registration number BKA 661 XA (Kaduna) already on its side with the cab detached and petrol gushing out,” he stated.

The tanker, which was transporting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), reportedly fell while in motion due to road conditions.
To prevent an explosion, fire service operatives applied chemical suppressants and observed strict safety protocols. The team was also supported by SAFER Highway Patrol officers, who provided security at the scene.
Thanks to the coordinated emergency response, no casualties or fire incidents were reported, and traffic disruption was kept to a minimum.
