The All Progressives Congress (APC) has emerged victorious in the Lagos State local government elections, winning all 57 chairmanship positions and 375 out of 376 councillorship seats across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

The Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) announced the results on Sunday, confirming that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured only one councillorship seat in Ward D, Yaba.

Voters across the state headed to the polls on Saturday to elect local government chairpersons and councillors who will oversee grassroots governance for the next term. Lagos State, Nigeria’s commercial capital, has over seven million registered voters.

According to LASIEC, 15 of Nigeria’s 19 registered political parties participated in the elections. The APC’s clean sweep of the chairmanship seats consolidates its longstanding dominance in Lagos politics, a state that is also the political base of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who served as governor from 1999 to 2007.

The councils and LCDAs covered in the election include major administrative regions such as Ikeja, Alimosho, Ikorodu, Surulere, Lagos Mainland, Eti-Osa, Badagry, and Epe, among others.

Despite reports of delays in the arrival of electoral materials and isolated incidents of voter intimidation, no major violence was recorded during the polls.

Addressing journalists after the election, LASIEC Chairman, Justice Bola Okikiolu-Ighile, defended the commission’s conduct and dismissed claims that some political parties were barred from contesting.

“No party was prevented from participating. We ensured inclusivity and fair opportunity for all registered political parties,” she stated.

She also addressed concerns about voter turnout, noting that while some polling units experienced sparse activity, others recorded smooth and quick voting processes, leading to shorter queues and faster departures.

“In some areas, turnout was impressive. In others, it appeared low. But in many cases, people voted quickly and left. So, assessing turnout purely based on on-site observation may be misleading,” Okikiolu-Ighile explained.

She admitted that logistical challenges, especially in riverine and hard-to-reach areas, posed difficulties. However, she assured that both sensitive and non-sensitive materials eventually reached their destinations.

With the landslide victory, the APC has once again cemented its political stronghold over Lagos, reinforcing its grip on the state’s local governance structure and maintaining control of one of Nigeria’s most economically strategic regions.
