The Zamfara State Police Command has arrested eight suspected criminals including a notorious bandit, a gun runner, and two informants in a series of coordinated operations aimed at flushing out criminal elements across the state.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, disclosed this during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Gusau, highlighting the recent breakthroughs in the ongoing battle against banditry and other forms of crime in Zamfara.
According to DSP Abubakar, one of the arrested suspects is 50-year-old Ibrahim Mohammed from Maru Local Government Area, identified as a suspected bandit. The other suspects include a gun runner, two bandit informants, and five additional individuals implicated in various criminal activities.
The police said the arrests were made following credible intelligence from members of the public. Items recovered from the suspects include assorted rifles, a stolen ATM card, quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, and a Toyota Corolla vehicle.
“These arrests are a significant step forward in our sustained efforts to rid Zamfara of violent criminal networks,” DSP Abubakar said.
Meanwhile, tragedy struck on Thursday evening when suspected bandits ambushed an 18-seater commercial bus along the Kucheri-Wanzamai Road in Tsafe Local Government Area, killing six people, including women and children.
The deadly ambush, which occurred around 7:00 p.m., reportedly led to the abduction of several passengers.
Eyewitnesses said the bus had just passed a military checkpoint and developed a mechanical fault. After repairs, the driver resumed the journey but soon noticed several motorcycles tailing the vehicle.
“They suddenly opened fire on the bus. Out of fear, the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to veer off the road, somersault, and burst into flames,” a source said.
The incident happened shortly after the daily road closure enforced by the Zamfara State Government a security measure designed to curb the rising wave of highway banditry.
Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and efforts are underway to apprehend those behind the ambush. The Zamfara State Police Command has reassured the public of its commitment to ensuring security and restoring peace in the troubled region.
