A petrol tanker carrying 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit exploded on Thursday evening at Celica Junction along the new Ife Expressway in Ibadan, Oyo State, following a brake failure incident.
Eyewitnesses said the tanker lost control, crashed into a Toyota Prado SUV and another car before toppling and bursting into flames. The impact caused significant damage to the vehicles, though no casualties were reported.
According to the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, the fire was reported at exactly 6:27 p.m., and emergency responders promptly arrived at the scene.
“Our firemen swiftly applied chemical foam compound to contain the fire and prevented it from spreading to the nearby Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) filling station and surrounding properties,” Akinwande said.
He confirmed that the blaze was extinguished with the joint efforts of the state and Federal Fire Services. “Although the tanker and a car were gutted by fire, and the Prado was pushed into a gutter, no lives were lost,” he added.
The incident caused temporary traffic disruption in the area as emergency crews battled the flames and cleared the wreckage.
