LAGOS GOVT WARNS PROSPECTIVE HOME BUYERS AGAINST FAKE ESTATE AGENTS, FRAUDSTERS

The Lagos State Government has issued a strong warning to residents—particularly prospective home buyers—to be cautious of fake estate agents and fraudsters promoting non-existent housing units on social media platforms.
This warning came from the Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, in response to a recent case involving fraudulent advertisements on social media, which falsely claimed that flats in the newly commissioned Lagos State Government-owned Egan-Igando Mixed Housing Estate were available for sale.
“The advertised estate has been fully allocated,” the Commissioner clarified, “and any claims suggesting otherwise are fraudulent. The video in circulation is a scam by an impersonating agent.”
He further emphasized that the Lagos State Government does not engage third-party agents to sell, lease, or rent units in its housing estates. Instead, the Estate Department of the Lagos State Ministry of Housing is the sole body responsible for direct sales, while housing units under the Mortgage or Rent-to-Own schemes are managed exclusively by the Lagos State Mortgage Board.
Hon. Akinderu-Fatai advised all prospective buyers to verify any property offer by directly contacting the Ministry’s Estate Department, urging due diligence before making financial commitments.
He also stressed that the Lagos State Government will not be held responsible for any losses incurred by individuals who fall victim to fraudulent transactions, adding that anyone caught perpetrating such criminal acts will face legal consequences.
In a related development, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr. Abdulhafis Toriola, has instructed all allottees of the Egan-Igando Mixed Housing Estate to take physical possession of their allocated units or risk revocation. This measure aims to prevent fake agents from misleading the public into believing that unoccupied flats are still available.
