The Court of Appeal sitting in Akure, the Ondo State capital, has upheld the election of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
Aiyedatiwa, who contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after polling 366,781 votes and securing victory in all 18 local government areas of Ondo State.
He defeated his closest rival, Agboola Ajayi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The Court of Appeal’s ruling marks another legal triumph for Aiyedatiwa.
Earlier, on June 4, 2025, the Ondo State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal dismissed several petitions contesting his election, including one filed by Ajayi, who alleged widespread electoral irregularities.
Presided over by Justice Benson Ogubu, the tribunal also threw out similar petitions from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), Allied Peoples’ Movement (APM), and African Alliance (AA), thereby upholding Aiyedatiwa’s victory.
Prior to that, on March 11, 2025, the Supreme Court dismissed a separate suit filed by Ajayi challenging Aiyedatiwa’s candidacy.
The apex court ruled that the case was filed outside the permissible timeframe and that Ajayi, not being a member of the APC, had no legal standing to challenge the party’s internal affairs, including issues relating to the eligibility of Aiyedatiwa’s running mate.
