Tottenham Hotspur manager Thomas Frank says his side will be “incredibly competitive” as they prepare to take on Paris Saint-Germain in Wednesday’s UEFA Super Cup clash in Udine his first match in charge of the club.
Frank, who joined Spurs after seven seasons at Brentford, faces a daunting opener against a PSG team that clinched their first-ever Champions League title in May with a 5-0 demolition of Inter Milan.
“I am convinced we will be incredibly competitive tomorrow,” the Dane told reporters on Tuesday. “Paris is, of course, further down the line in terms of their peak performance, but we are ready for the match. It’s a massive game, a big challenge, and a great opportunity. We will definitely embrace it and give everything.”
Tottenham ended a 17-year trophy drought last season by lifting the Europa League after defeating Manchester United in the final, but an underwhelming 17th-place Premier League finish led to the dismissal of former boss Ange Postecoglou.
Frank’s arrival has already made an impression, according to veteran defender Ben Davies. “Thomas Frank has come in and brought a lot of energy. The lads are really enjoying working under him, and it’s very exciting,” Davies said.
The Super Cup tie will be Spurs’ first without captain Son Heung-min, who has joined LAFC in the United States, while playmaker James Maddison misses out with a knee injury sustained in pre-season.
Striker Dominic Solanke is fit to feature, but midfielder Yves Bissouma has been omitted for “disciplinary reasons.” New signing Mohammed Kudus, acquired from West Ham, could make his debut, while speculation continues over a possible move for Crystal Palace winger Eberechi Eze a subject Frank declined to address.
