Lagos State Government on Thursday gave marching order for immediate dislogement of all types of squatters who have converted the underbelly of the new but yet to be commissioned Opebi – Mende bridge homes and stores.

Speaking during an unscheduled Inspection visit conducted by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tokunbo Wahab alongside the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, Engineer Olufemi Daramola and a newly appointed Permanent Secretary, Engr Olatokunbo Oyenuga, he directed security agencies to immediately move in and dislogde all the squatters and their shanties.

According to Wahab, the primary responsibility of every government is the preservation of life and properties and the present administration would not shirk its responsibility in that regard.

He said it is very disheartening that an iconic project which is almost ready for commissioning has suddenly been taken over by different shades of miscreants and squatters.

He added that even some people from the Cane village have come to the underbelly of the bridge to create an illegal settlement.

He vowed that the state government will not only dislodge the squatters but will permanently monitor the locations for sustainance so that they do not return.

He warned all the automobile mechanics who have converted the open space adjacent to the bridge to their workshop to immediately relocate to avoid impounding of the vehicles.

The Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Engr Olufemi Daramola while conducting the Commissioner and others round said his Office is concerned that if immediate action is not taken, the area might become a slum.

Engr Daramola emphasised that the State Government has invested humongous resources in erecting the bridge and would not allow undesirable elements to use it as a means of unleashing terror on law abiding citizens.

He gave an undertaking that the Office of Infrastructure will partner with the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources to ensure a total cleanliness of the area and its sustenance.
