The Nigerian Senate has confirmed General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff following his nomination by President Bola Tinubu.

The confirmation took place on Wednesday during the ongoing screening exercise for newly appointed service chiefs.

General Oluyede, who previously served as Chief of Army Staff, replaces General Christopher Musa as the highest-ranking military officer in the country.

With his confirmation, Oluyede is expected to oversee joint military operations and serve as the principal military adviser to the President and the Minister of Defence.

His appointment marks a key step in the recent overhaul of the nation’s military leadership by President Tinubu, which aims to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture amid persistent challenges of insurgency, banditry, and separatist unrest across the country.

Security experts have expressed optimism that the new leadership will bring renewed focus and strategic coordination to ongoing military operations nationwide.
