BREAKING: MAN UNITED SACK MANAGER RUBEN AMORIM
By: Sefiu Ajape
Manchester United have dismissed head coach Ruben Amorim, the club confirmed on Monday, January 5, 2026.
The Portuguese tactician, who joined the Red Devils in November 2024, was relieved of his duties following growing concerns over the team’s performances and recent comments that reportedly exposed internal tensions at Old Trafford.
At the time of his sacking, United were sixth on the Premier League table. His exit came less than 24 hours after he openly criticised the club’s hierarchy during a post-match press conference following a 1–1 draw with Leeds United, a development that sources say hastened the club’s decision.
The club is expected to appoint an interim manager while it begins the process of identifying a long-term replacement.
In a statement later published on the club’s website, Manchester United announced that former player Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team’s next fixture against Burnley.
The statement read: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.
“Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
“With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.
“This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.
“The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.
“Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.”
