KWARA: WORO VILLAGE CHIEF CLAIMS BANDITS OPERATED FREELY FOR 10 HOURS

The head of Woro Village, Umar Salihu, said the absence of adequate security allowed bandits to operate freely for about 10 hours.
He revealed that the attackers, who had previously killed over 200 people in the community, initially sent a letter claiming they were coming to preach. Salihu explained that the letter reached him on January 10, 2026, and contrary to villagers’ expectations, the bandits carried out a brutal raid, killing numerous residents over a span of 10 hours.
Salihu described the aftermath: “Some victims were buried according to Christian rites, while others, who were not from the community, had to be taken elsewhere for burial. Some were burned inside the church. Others were locked in their rooms and set on fire. For those burned inside the church, we cannot identify or count all of them.”
He recounted how the letter came to him: “I received notification on January 10 around 7:45 a.m. from a man—the Hakimi of a small village about four kilometers from our community. He told me the bandits had abducted him and forced him to deliver the letter, threatening to kill him otherwise. That is why he brought it to me. After receiving it, I first took it to the DSS at our local government headquarters, and the following day, I presented it to the Emirate Council, which forwarded it to the relevant authorities.”
The letter stated that the bandits intended to come preach, but it did not include a date or time. Salihu added: “We have soldiers stationed here, but the bandits arrived at night. There was an exchange of gunfire between the army and the bandits, after which the soldiers were withdrawn, leaving the area unprotected.”
“There is no security presence and that is why they came and spent almost 10 hours.”
