The Federal Government has commenced the implementation of key welfare provisions from its renegotiated agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), including salary-related allowances. This was confirmed in a statement released Monday by Boriowo Folasade, Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education.

The move underscores President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to agreements with education stakeholders and to maintaining industrial harmony in public universities. According to the statement, Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa announced that the 40% increase in the Consolidated Academic Allowance (CAA) for ASUU members took effect from January 1, 2026.

Some federal universities have already reflected the increment in salary payments, and the Ministry is taking steps to ensure uniform nationwide implementation. Institutions have been formally instructed to integrate the approved increase into their payroll systems so that all eligible academic staff benefit.

Dr. Alausa also directed vice chancellors to ensure strict compliance with the framework for implementing the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA). He emphasized prudent financial management and urged university managements to facilitate prompt payment in line with guidelines from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC).

“Timely implementation of both the CAA increase and CATA will strengthen the academic environment, boost staff morale, and support improved teaching, research, and learning outcomes across Nigerian universities,” the minister stated.

The statement reaffirmed the FG’s commitment to honoring agreements with education sector stakeholders, promoting transparency, and continuously improving the quality of education nationwide.

The 2025 FG–ASUU agreement follows a renegotiation process that began in 2017 to review the 2009 pact, long overdue for revision. The agreement, finalized under the current administration with the Yayale Ahmed-led committee, focuses on improved conditions of service, funding, university autonomy, academic freedom, and broader reforms to curb brain drain and reposition universities for national development.

A key provision is the 40% upward review of academic staff remuneration, effective from January 1, 2026. Salaries now consist of the Consolidated University Academic Staff Salary and the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, intended to support research, publications, conferences, internet access, society memberships, and book procurement.

The agreement also restructures nine earned academic allowances to ensure fairness and accountability, including postgraduate supervision, fieldwork, clinical duties, examinations, and leadership roles. Additionally, a new Professorial Cadre Allowance has been introduced, granting full-time Professors ₦1.74 million annually and Readers ₦840,000 per year, recognizing experience and enhancing the academic profession.
