A fresh fire outbreak on Saturday evening engulfed the popular Singa Market in Kano metropolis, destroying goods worth millions of naira.

The inferno, which reportedly started at a large provision store, drew the attention of residents across the ancient city as flames spread to adjoining shops.

Eyewitnesses said the fire began in one of the major provision stores before extending to other sections of the market.

As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained.

Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Abdullahi, said firefighters were promptly deployed to contain the blaze.

“The fire outbreak started this evening at Gidan Gashash area, and efforts are being made to put out the fire to prevent it from spreading to other parts of the market,” he said.

“The agency has already mobilised its personnel and vehicles to the market. As you know, lack of access roads within the market, as well as human and vehicular movement around the market area, is affecting the movement of fire service vehicles.”

The latest incident comes barely weeks after another fire outbreak on February 2, 2026, destroyed three large stores in the market, resulting in significant losses.

During a sympathy visit to the affected traders, Governor Abba Yusuf donated N100 million to cushion the impact of the earlier inferno.

Authorities are yet to determine the cause of Saturday’s fire as emergency response efforts continue.
