Oreoluwa Odetunde, a University of Lagos graduate, was found dead at her off-campus apartment on Thursday.

The Media reported on Sunday that Odetunde was pursuing a Master of Business Administration at the S.C. Johnson College of Business in New York.

According to The Cornell Daily Sun (February 6), she was an international student who earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Lagos in 2017. While at Cornell, she was actively involved in several student organisations, including the Johnson African Business Society, the Black Graduate Business Association, and the Old Ezra Finance Club.

The report noted that Odetunde was also a Forté Fellow and Sage Scholar, and had contributed to research and strategic analysis for companies including Anchoria Asset Management and Greenwich Merchant Bank.

“We are heartbroken for Oreoluwa’s family, friends, classmates, and instructors, and we extend our deepest condolences during this difficult time,” the Cornell Johnson Graduate School stated in a LinkedIn post.

Odetunde’s passing adds to the increasing number of Nigerians who have recently died abroad.

In the United Kingdom, Nigerian footballer Saburi Adeniji passed away on February 6 after suffering a severe brain stem injury.

Likewise, another Nigerian student in the UK, Douglas Izevbigie, died on January 21 in hospital after a struggle with aggressive leukaemia.
